This White Queso recipe is creamy, cheesy, dippy perfection and it’s made with just 3 simple ingredients. Just like the white queso dip you get from your favorite Mexican joint and you won’t believe how easy it is to make.
Would you like to save this?
I never turn down an opportunity to dip or drizzle this white queso!
White Queso Dip That’s Just Like The Mexican Joint!
Our local Mexican restaurant sells a t-shirt that says “I’m just here for the queso” and my husband tries to get me to buy it every time we visit.
Because, honestly, it’s mostly true. I will never hit up a Mexican restaurant and not order a bowl of that cheesy, drippy white queso. But, I’m also gonna order some guacamole and at least one margarita on the rocks!
We have completely cracked the code on making restaurant white queso dip at home and you won’t believe how simple it is!
The secret is all in the cheese and I’m actually kind of embarrassed to tell you this, but you have to use white American cheese from the deli counter.
Don’t click away. Don’t lose all trust in me. Just give this a try and you’ll see!
♥ What We Love About This Recipe:
- Simple: Just three simple ingredients to make this recipe! What could be easier than that? This white queso dip is ready in no time at all and tastes just like the restaurant version.
- Party Food: We love serving this dip at parties or family gatherings! It’s perfect for the big game. You can dip chips, veggies, and so much more. See below for some serving suggestions!
- Versatile: Serve it with chips for dipping or drizzle it over our easy Mexican rice. We’ve even been known to dunk our fried tacos in this white queso recipe.
Ingredient Notes:
White American Cheese – Swing by the deli counter at your grocery store and ask for the white American cheese. We use Land o’ Lakes brand and literally always have a bag of this cheese in our fridge.
Whole Milk – We prefer whole milk for a rich and creamy sauce, but 2% should work just fine.
Taco Seasoning (Optional) – This adds a little something something that we really like in our queso, but it’s definitely optional! I recommend our homemade taco seasoning, but store bought is great too!
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
How To Make White Queso:
Add the milk and cheese slices to a sauce pan and turn the heat to medium low. Whisk constantly as the cheese melts so that the bottom doesn’t burn. Adjust the heat as needed.
Once the cheese has melted and the sauce is creamy, you can stir in the taco seasoning (or save it to sprinkle over the top).
This is also the time to adjust the thickness by adding more milk if you like.
Helpful Tip!
Thin It Out
Keep in mind that the white queso will thicken as it cools. If you’re not eating it immediately, you might want to add a splash more milk to make it a bit thinner. This will help you get the consistency you like as it cools.
Doctor It Up:
Personally, I think this dip is absolute perfection just the way it is, but you can easily brown some onions, tomatoes, and jalapeno to stir into your queso. It will make for a heartier dip, but one that isn’t quite so much like the restaurant version.
You can also top this dip with pico de gallo or slices of fresh jalapeno, if you like.
Serving Suggestions:
We dip all kinds of things in here:
- Tortilla Chips (Our fav restaurant style chips)
- Taquitos
- Frozen Mini Tacos
- Veggies
- Pretzels
You can also drizzle it over some of our Mexican-inspired favorites!
Helpful Tip!
Storage Instructions:
You can keep this queso dip stored in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days in a covered container. Let it cool completely before storing.
Reheat in the microwave or on the stove with a splash of milk until warmed through. Be careful not to overcook the cheese sauce.
Recipe FAQs:
The white queso dip that you find in many Mexican restaurants in America is made with white American cheese and milk.
If you’d like our white queso dip to be thicker, add in a bit more cheese and continue melting. Keep in mind that as the queso cools to room temperature, it will thicken considerably. For this reason, we tend to make our queso a bit thin so that it thickens up to the texture we like as it cools a bit.

Ingredients
- 1/2 pound white American cheese deli slices
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon taco seasoning optional
Instructions
- Cut or tear the cheese slices into quarters and place in the bottom of a medium sauce pan. Add the milk and turn the heat to medium low.
- Whisk constantly, being careful to scrape the bottom so as not to burn the cheese. Reduce the heat if needed to prevent the cheese from burning. Continue whisking until the cheese has fully melted into a smooth sauce.
- Sprinkle in the taco seasoning, whisk well, and serve immediately.
- Cheese will begin to thicken as it cools. You can stir in more milk to make for a thinner consistency as it cools or you can reheat as needed.

Is it okay to make this in a crockpot?
Karly says
Honestly, I haven’t tried it so I’m not sure how it would work. I would recommend making it on the stove as directed and then keeping it on low in a crockpot to keep warm and melty. Be sure to stir often though. 🙂
