For awhile there, my husband started calling me The Casserole Queen.
It was a title I had rightly earned, serving up a different casserole night after night.
I mean, what’s not to love about a casserole? They’re pretty much always cheesy, they always turn out hot and melty and comforting, and they’re generally pretty easy to throw together!
Our hamburger casserole is a family favorite around here and it’s actually loaded with veggies and the kids still love it! That’s the magic of a casserole, if you ask me.
Anyway, this bacon cheeseburger tater tot casserole skips the veggies in favor of the flavors of a juicy burger, loaded with cheese, and topped with bacon. Add your side of tater tots right on top and this is basically a cheeseburger you eat with a fork. 😉

Ground Beef – We pretty much always use the leanest beef we can, but you can use whatever you like. Just drain off any excess grease.
Steak Seasoning Blend – This is where we get some of that cheeseburger vibe. You can use your favorite burger seasoning here. We recommend Montreal Steak Seasoning.
Seasoning Blend
Montreal Steak Seasoning is great on steaks, but we really love to use it to season burgers.
Bacon – Fried crisp, of course.
Cheese – We’re using both condensed cheese soup and cheddar!
How to Make:
Beef: While your oven is preheating, start by browning the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. After a couple of minutes add the chopped onion and cook until the beef is mostly browned through.
Add in the steak seasoning and continue to cook, mixing until the season coats the meat and it has browned through. Drain the grease from the skillet.
Mix: Time for cheese and bacon! In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef and onions along with the condensed cheese soup, bacon, shredded cheddar, and sour cream. Stir it and make sure everything gets well combined! The cheese and sour cream will add a ton of flavor to the casserole.
Bake: When the mixture is ready, pour it into a prepared baking dish and smooth until it is evenly distributed in the dish. Finally, top the mixture with the frozen tater tots to make a tasty, crunchy casserole topping.
Bake – Pop this dish in a 375 degree oven and bake for 45 minutes or until the tots are golden brown and crispy. Make sure to serve it while it’s still good and hot!
toppings!
Your favorite burger toppings would be great sprinkled on top! We’re thinking shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and chopped pickles and onion.
FAQ’s:
Yep! Tater tots are grated potatoes that are formed together into bite sized pieces.
Ore Ida actually coined the term ‘tater tots’ and we think they’re the best! In this recipe we actually use the Ore Ida Crispy Crowns – they’re tater tots that are perfectly shaped for casseroles since they’re flatter.
For a thicker layer of cheesy beef, bake this up in an 8×8 or 9×9 dish instead of a 9×13. You’ll need less tots since there will be less surface area, but you’ll get a thicker portion of the ground beef mixture.
What We Love About This Recipe!
This is a cozy, comfort food meal that tastes like a burger without needing to fire up the grill. We love that cheesy beef mixture and the crispy tots on top make it a kid favorite, too.
